The Colombian Foreign Ministry insists on denying Peru’s sovereignty over Santa Rosa Island and expressed his rejection of the arrest of two Colombian topographs in that place. Although the professionals did not have the documentation to enter foreign territory, they described their arrest as “irregular” and demanded their immediate release.
According to the pronouncement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, the detainees are topographs that carried out technical works linked to the expansion of the Victoria Regia dock in Leticia. Therefore, they assured that these activities did not represent an exercise of sovereignty or an affectation to the territorial integrity of Peru.
Gustavo Petro’s government also questioned the presence of Peruvian authorities in the area, noting that Colombia does not recognize Peru’s sovereignty over that territory. He also reported that the consulate in Iquitos is providing consular assistance to guarantee respect for due process and detention conditions.
