Colombia could be open to buying monomers from Venezuela

Deputies of Fraction 16J will ask Colombia to adhere to complaints against Monómeros

The Colombian Finance Minister, José Antonio Ocampo, said on November 30 that if his country were to acquire Monómeros it would have the possibility of becoming a producer and exporter of gas

Colombia may be willing to buy the Venezuelan fertilizer company Monomeros. This was stated by the Minister of Finance of that country, José Antonio Ocampo, this Wednesday, November 30.

“On the issue of fertilizers, I have said that we are willing to do anything, even here among ourselves, to buy Monomeros and expand it significantly,” Ocampo appeared at an event with coffee growers in Bogotá, reported Reuters.

The Colombian minister stressed that the acquisition of the company would give his country the possibility of being a producer of fertilizers and even an exporter of gas, “which we have never been.”

Monomeros is headquartered in Barranquilla, Colombia. It is owned by Pequiven, which is a unit of Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). The Nicolás Maduro government regained control of the company’s board of directors in mid-September, after being controlled for a couple of years by the president of the National Assembly in 2015, Juan Guaidó.

The recent changes in the management of Monomeros came at a time when relations between Colombia and Venezuela, particularly in economic and military cooperation, have strengthened, following the election of Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

At the beginning of November the ruler Nicolas Maduro led a working day dedicated to the country’s petrochemical and agricultural sector. In the activity, he asserted that the company was on the path of reconstruction and growth.

He recalled that when the government took control of Monomeros they found it dismantled. He accused Juan Guaidó and the founder of Voluntad Popular Leopoldo López of being responsible for the looting of the state company.
