Colombia asked this Tuesday at the UN General Assembly that Russia “response” for the consequences that the Russian invasion of Ukraine will have for the economy and international law, after two years of devastating covid-19 epidemic.
“Russia must respond internationally for the economic, legal and humanitarian consequences of all kinds” that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is having and will have, Colombian Vice President and Foreign Minister Marta Lucía Ramírez said in her speech.
Colombia reiterates its solidarity with the Ukrainian people and its admiration for the courage with which they face this unjustified aggression by Russia. According to the UN, the invasion has so far left more than 677,000 refugees in the bordering countries and 102 civilians killed and 304 wounded, although the body recognizes that the balance can be much higher.
The Colombian foreign minister is one of the few high-ranking officials from member states who has appeared in the gallery at the exceptional meeting of the UN General Assembly, which began on Monday.
This emergency session puts into discussion the approval of a resolution condemning Russia after the failure of the Security Council last Friday to validate a similar sentence due to the veto of Russia, which chaired the highest forum of the institution in February.
Ramirez lashed out “against the immense gravity of the violations” incurred by Russia and the “dismal precedent” for humanity if they are consolidated. He also stressed that “the world does not want and will not accept” a return to empires.
