The Foreign Minister of Venezuela, Carlos Faría, and Álvaro Leyva, the next Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia in the government of the elected president, Gustavo Petro, have agreed to restore relations between the two nations as of August 7, the date on which that Petro will take possession.
“The foreign ministers reviewed the work agenda for the gradual normalization of bilateral relations as of August 7, with the appointment of ambassadors and consular personnel and teams,” said the Venezuelan television network.
Relations between Bogotá and Caracas have been tense under the current Colombian president. After winning the presidential elections in May, the new Colombian president announced talks with the Venezuelan government to, among other issues, address the need to reopen the borders between the two countries and reestablish the “full exercise of Human Rights.” Humans” after Duque broke diplomatic relations in February 2019.
Álvaro Leyva arrived in Venezuela today Thursday to meet with representatives of that country. The next Petro minister was received by the Venezuelan deputy minister for Latin America, Rander Peña, upon his arrival in the state of Táchira, located in western Venezuela and bordering the Colombian department of Norte de Santander.
The governor of Táchira, Freddy Bernal, said on his Twitter profile: “Binational meeting between brother countries. Today is a day of joy for Táchira. In the Palace of the Lions I received the foreign minister appointed by the elected president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro“.
