Seventeen countries of Latin America and the Caribbean gathered in Panama signed an agreement to advance public policies that improve school feeding plans, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
“Promoting more resilient, inclusive, quality and sustainable school feeding programs has an extraordinary impact on communities in economic, social, educational and environmental terms.“said the FAO Deputy Director-General Mario Lubetkin.

Belize, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Ecuador, Honduras, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Suriname and Uruguay They officially joined the Regional School Feeding Network (RAES), in a meeting held in Panama on November 21 and 22, according to a statement released this Monday by the UN entity.

The RAES aims to be a space for dialogue for managers and technicians about the solutions and innovations necessary in the region.in addition to offering technical assistance to support countries in the implementation and improvement of their programs, contributing to the promotion of the human right to adequate food, according to the FAO document.

After accession, the member countries signed a declaration to advance school feeding policies and programs with which “They will seek to work together, in the medium and long term, to expand student coverage, improve school infrastructure, develop standards, strengthen links with family farming, implement food and nutritional education actions, and increase the budget dedicated to these programs.“, according to official information.

The RAES is an initiative of the Brazil International Cooperation Program (FAO), created in 2018, the result of collaboration since 2009 between the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) and the National Development Fund of Education (FNDE) of the Ministry of Education (MEC), with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which acts as executive secretariat of this network.
