Colombia activates security protocols due to risk alert in the Maiquetía air zone

Aeronáutica Civil de Colombia

The Civil Aeronautics of Colombia requested that all commercial airlines that operate routes that cross or approach the Maiquetía FIR provide an internal analysis on the impact of the notice on their operations.

The Civil Aeronautics of Colombia (Aerocivil) said this Saturday, November 22, that it is in contact with the airlines that operate in the country to guarantee air safety, after the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an international notice that urged commercial flights to “exercise caution” when flying over Venezuela and the southern Caribbean Sea.

The notice, identified as NOTAM A0012/25, explained that the deterioration of security conditions and the increase in military activity in and around Venezuela raise the level of risk for aircraft operating in that region.

For this reason, Aerocivil (Colombia) requested on Friday, November 21, all commercial airlines that operate routes that cross or approach the Maiquetía FIR to submit an internal analysis on the impact of the notice on their operations.

This analysis, according to Aerocivil, must include in detail the implications on their itineraries, possible detours and the measures they have adopted to reinforce security.

The entity also recalled that any operational adjustment must respect the minimum prior notice of 72 hours required by the FAA.

The Civil Aeronautics of Colombia also stressed that air safety is an “intangible and non-negotiable” principle. Therefore, it maintains constant coordination with the airlines to guarantee that, while the implications of the international alert are evaluated, passengers and crews are protected under the highest international standards.

Tensions between the US and Venezuela remain tense, as Nicolás Maduro claims that the Trump administration intends to invade the country to seize the nation’s resources, while the US military forces assure that their operation is against drug trafficking that leaves from the south towards their territory.

To date, the United States has destroyed more than 20 boats that were allegedly transporting drugs. More than 80 people have died in these operations.
