Collision of two trains in Tunisia leaves 95 injured

At least 95 people were injured in a collision between two passenger trains on Monday morning in the south of the Tunisian capital, according to a civil defense department official.

In the collision that took place in the Jebel Jelloud area, near Barcelona’s main station located in the heart of Tunis, a long-distance train hit another train running on the same railway, said Samir Oueslati, regional director Acting Civil Protection in Tunisia.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals and one of the two drivers suffered several fractures, Oueslati added to the radio station.

“The collision left 95 injured who were taken to hospitals,” Civil Defense spokesman Moez Treaa said, adding that one of the trains was carrying passengers while the second was empty.

According to the spokesman, the injured suffer fractures or bruises or are in a state of shock, but there are no serious cases to be regretted.

The incident occurred at 0930 local time (0830 GMT) in the Jbel Jelloud area, on the approach to a terminal in central Tunis.

At least 15 ambulances and other emergency vehicles were mobilized to the scene of the accident. The causes of the accident are not yet known.

Last October, President Kais Said resigned from the general director of the National Railway Company (SNCFT), Belkacem Bettaia, just 24 hours after a similar accident in which 33 people were injured.
