College of Psychologists asks the Chamber of Deputies to declare an urgent Mental Health project

The Dominican College of Psychologists asked the Chamber of Deputies this Wednesday to declare urgent the bill of Access, Prevention, Treatment and Rehabilitation in mental health, an initiative submitted by Aníbal Díaz, deputy for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).

The president of the association, Hanoi Vargas, considers it vitally important that this law be approved at a time when “the Dominican Republic has been going through one of the most difficult times in terms of mental health. This, among other reasons, was largely paid for by the post-Covid-19 effects, which in the first place forced us into a global cloister, leaving sequels from the family nucleus to the economic, social and citizen coexistence order.”

Hanoi Vargas made this request today to the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco, in a visit coordinated by legislator Aníbal Díaz, proponent of the piece, who was also accompanied by legislators Sandro Sánchez, Amado Díaz, Priscila D’Oleo, Dr. María Mercedes Fernández, Soraya Suárez, Persio Sully Maldonado Bonnelly and Ramón Aníbal O’lea.

The president of the Dominican Association of Psychologists – who visited Pacheco together with Nicanor Rodríguez, Abril Arias, Yeny Tiburcio, William Peña, Milton Corniel and Enid Gil – understands that “in addition to all the problems that affect the Dominican family, the country has a coverage system in the ARS that turns its back on mental health, conceives health as the primitive element only as organic, physical or bone health, that is, conceiving health as the structural physical element, leaving behind mental health ”. The mental health project, introduced by Aníbal Díaz, who subsequently obtained the support of a statement signed by 132 deputies, aims to create the legal framework to guarantee access to services, promotion, treatment and rehabilitation in this area, as conditions for the full exercise of the right to health and well-being of the person, the family and the community.
