The Ministry of Health (Ssa) reported that so far in the 2025-2026 cold season, 21 cases of extreme natural temperatures have been reported, as well as six deaths associated with the winter season, which is equivalent to a fatality rate of 28.5 percent.
In the Weekly Report on Health Damage due to Extreme Natural Temperatures, prepared by the General Directorate of Epidemiology, as of January 15, it stands out that of the total number of deaths certified due to low temperatures in the country, one corresponds to hypothermia and five to carbon monoxide poisoning. The states with cases of extreme natural temperatures are Veracruz, with 6; Sonora, 5; Nuevo León, 3; Chiapas, 2, as well as Chihuahua, Baja California and Querérato, with one.
In this regard, data from the Ssa indicate that freezing a person can cause numbness, drowsiness, loss of vision, staggering, daze or semi-consciousness, and tingling.
Warning that the extremities of the body most susceptible to frostbite are the nose, ears, fingers and toes, but it can also be general. It is possible for a person in wet clothing to suffer frostbite and death.
