COE keeps 27 provinces alert

COE mantiene 27 provincias alerta

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) warned this morning that it is keeping 27 provinces on alert before the continuation of downpours that may occur, overflowing of rivers, streams, ravines, as well as sudden urban and rural flooding. It also warns about landslides, due to the saturation of the soil.

He also reported that the flooding of rivers and the gales of Hurricane Fiona that affected the country last Monday, damaged 23 highways and 16 bridges in towns in the East and Northwest, which were the regions most affected by the natural phenomenon.

The director of COERetired General Juan Manuel Méndez explained that of the 27 provinces that remain on alert for possible flooding, 17 are yellow and 10 green.

Méndez recommended that people “refrain from crossing rivers, streams and ravines that have high volumes of water and not use spas, in the provinces under alert”

The provinces of Santo Domingo, La Altagracia, El Seibo, La Romana, Hato Mayor, San José de Ocoa, Samaná, La Vega, San Cristóbal, Distrito Nacional, Santiago, Monte Plata, Monseñor Nouel, María Trinidad Sánchez remain on yellow alert. and San Pedro de Macoris.

While in green they continue Barahona, Santiago Rodríguez, Espaillat, Monte Cristi, Peravia, Azua, San Juan, Valverde and Puerto Plata.

Méndez reported that two bridges and three overpasses also collapsed.

He explained that today, Wednesday, the humid and unstable conditions will continue over our territory, associated with Hurricane Fiona, which is located about 200 kms.

Fiona is moving north of Caicos Island, with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. and moving north at 13 kph. For this reason, there will be clouds from morning hours with moderate to heavy downpours, occasional electrical storms, gusts of wind towards several provinces of the regions: northwest, north, the eastern plain, the Caribbean coast, as well as the Cordillera Central and the border area.

“By virtue of the above and the provisions of article 2, chapter 1, of Law 147-02, on Risk Management, this Emergency Operations Center (COE) maintains the alert in 27 provinces,” said the official.
