SANTO DOMINGO.– The Emergency Operations Center (COE) issued a green alert for five provinces due to possible urban and flash floods, because a trough will be approaching Dominican territory and will increase humidity and instability starting tomorrow.
The provinces on alert are Greater Santo Domingo, Monte Plata, San Pedro de Macorís, Hato Mayor and El Seibo.
The National Meteorology Office (ONAMET) reported this morning that this weekend a sunny environment with little rain will prevail in the national geography, due to the effects of an air mass with low moisture content on the forecast area.
However, there could be some episodes of weak showers at the end of the afternoon over isolated points of the mountainous systems and the eastern plain, due to the local effects of diurnal and orographic heating.
For tomorrow, Saturday, the Onamet predicts an increase in humidity and instability in the climate, due to the effects of a trough located at various levels of the troposphere. For this reason, cloudy increases are expected near noon and during the night, accompanied by moderate to strong downpours, with electrical storms and gusts of wind; mainly towards provinces of the northeast regions, the eastern plain, the Caribbean coast and the Central Cordillera.
This downpour activity will gradually spread to other sectors of the national geography and throughout Sunday.
The ONAMET recommends the operators of fragile and small boats from Punta Mangles, El Seibó to Cabo San Rafael, La Altagracia, to carry out their operations near the perimeter due to waves and irregular wind.
