Santo Domingo.– The Emergency Operations Center (COE) increased the number of provinces on green alert to six due to the forecast of downpours associated with a trough that will continue to affect the national territory during the next 24 hours, as reported by the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet).
The provinces on green alert are Espaillat, Duarte, María Trinidad Sánchez, Hermanas Mirabal, Puerto Plata and San Pedro de Macorís, due to the risk of flooding of rivers, streams and ravines, as well as possible urban flooding in vulnerable areas.
Downpours predicted in several regions
Indomet explained that the trough, associated with a frontal system, will be generating Scattered showers, moderate to heavy at timeswith possible isolated thunderstorms and gusts of wind, mainly in locations in the northern, northeastern, Cibao Valley, eastern and Central mountain range regions.

During the night of this Friday, the rainfall will be concentrated in provinces such as Samaná, María Trinidad Sánchez, Espaillat, Puerto Plata, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, Duarte, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, Santiago, Hermanas Mirabal, Montecristi, Santiago Rodríguez, Pedernales, Valverde, San Juan, Elías Piña and Dajabón, among other areas.
Rains will continue on Saturday
According to the forecasting agency, in the first hours of this Saturday the trough will be located to the northeast, over the Atlantic Ocean, and together with the local effects it will continue to generate downpours with possible thunderstorms and gusts of wind in provinces such as Samaná, Sánchez Ramírez, María Trinidad Sánchez, Duarte and Hermanas Mirabal.
In the afternoon, the rains will move towards the northeast, southeast and the Central mountain range, affecting provinces such as Hato Mayor, El Seibo, La Altagracia, SantiagoPuerto Plata, Espaillat, La Vega, Duarte, Samaná, Santiago Rodríguez, Valverde, María Trinidad Sánchez, Sánchez Ramírez, Monsignor Nouel, Saint ChristopherMonte Plata and the Greater Santo Domingo.
Given these conditions, the authorities urged the population to remain attentive to official bulletins and take the necessary precautions, especially those who reside in flood-prone areas.
