The leadership of the Central Obrera Departamental (COD) affirmed that the strike and blockade this Thursday it occurred due to the inertia of the Central Obrera Boliviana (COB) and the passivity of the labor authorities; while the Government minimized the protest and the Minister of Labor assured that it only affected 30% of the population in Cochabamba.
“As it has not been seen for a long time, 95% of the workers participated in this protest measure, the Minister of Labor wants to detract from the strike, but the citizens saw the participation (…) this measure was taken due to the inertia of our entity matrix that he did not pay attention to the demands that we had for a long time”, said the executive of the Cochabamba workers, Javier López.
This Thursday, at least 24 accesses from the city of Cochabamba were blocked by the workers in protest at the lack of attention from the Government. The COD specifications contain at least seven demands.
The Minister of Labor, Verónica Navia, offered a press conference in which she said that the strike was inconsequential and that only 30% of workers complied with the measure. However, Cochabamba media reports confirm that the strike was total because the workers left early to block bridges and overpasses that prevented the mobilization of citizens.
“That they present us with any of their demands with their attached documents. Since February 9 we are waiting for the documents that they have against the headquarters, we do not have in any instance of our offices, neither here nor in La Paz”, said Navia when explaining that she did not receive any claim from the workers in writing.
But López affirmed that the demands were public and that until now they have not obtained the support of the COB because it is in alliance with the Government itself.“we do not distance ourselves from our parent entity, but we believe that we can fight for our demands from our regions,” he said and encouraged other departmental workers’ unions to take similar measures.
Resignation of the Minister of Labor; creation of laws and regulations that sanction non-compliance with resolutions and injunctions; sue the lack of labor courts for the department; demand guarantees and protection for national production; institutionalization of insurance funds; creation of items in education; and rejection of the Public Servant Statute to be applied to Sedcam workers, are part of the package of demands of the valley workers.
