#CocuyoClaroyRaspao | Edmundo in exile: What’s next for the opposition?

Edmundo González urges security forces to stop repressing protests

Luz Mely Reyes, director of Efecto Cocuyo and member of the Editorial Board of SuchWhich Xabier Coscojuela spoke with journalist Juan Pablo Arocha about the latest developments related to the exile of Edmundo González and his recognition by the Spanish Congress as the winner of the presidential elections on July 28.

Juan Pablo Arocha, a journalist based in Spain, believes that Edmundo González’s departure from the country and his arrival in Madrid could change the political panorama of the opposition in the event of a possible recognition as the winner of the presidential elections of July 28 by the Spanish government and the European Union.

In program 182 of #CocuyoClaroyRaspao, the director of Efecto Cocuyo, Luz Mely Reyes and the member of the Editorial Board of SuchWhichXabier Coscojuela spoke with Arocha about the latest developments related to the exile of Edmundo González and the approval of a resolution in the Congress of Deputies, which calls for the recognition of González as president-elect.

Before speaking with Juan Pablo Arocha, the hosts of the program talked about the presidential debate in the United States and the statements made by former President Donald Trump, in which he criminalized Venezuelan migrants. They also addressed the position of the Democratic Party candidate, Kamala Harris, before and after her nomination to the White House.

Arocha said that the arrival of Edmundo González in Madrid caused a stir in the Venezuelan community in Spain: “There was a feeling of defeat in the first hours after it was learned that he had left the country.” The journalist also pointed out that the meeting between González and Spanish President Pedro Sánchez generated new expectations:

The meeting between Edmundo González and Pedro Sánchez in Moncloa is a sign of support, and contrary to Sánchez’s first statements, it is difficult to know whether or not he will recognize Edmundo González as the winner of the elections.

He said that the opposition sectors should meet to unify their line of discourse, taking into account the role that Edmundo González will play as leader of the Unitary Platform from his exile.

Regarding the debate that took place in the Spanish Congress on September 11 and ended with the approval of a motion urging the government to recognize González as president-elect, Juan Pablo Arocha highlighted the position of the Basque Nationalist Party and the Canarian Coalition.

The Basque Nationalist Party and the Canarian Coalition decided to support the Popular Party’s proposal and not that of the PSOE, despite the fact that both parties supported Sánchez to form a government.

In his opinion, Arocha believes that the decisions of these parties do not mean a break in their alliance with the party that holds power in the government. He also believes that the role of the Popular Party (PP) in the political situation in Venezuela has been important and that it could benefit the vote of many Venezuelans in future elections in Spain.

Regarding the refusal of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) to recognize Edmundo González, Arocha said that it is due to various factors.

The case of Juan Guaidó did a lot of damage to international politics and under that excuse, the Government does not want to recognize Edmundo González (…) It seems that the European Parliament could make a decision next week, however, the possible recognition would not oblige the Spanish government either.

The hosts of #CocuyoClaroyRaspao also discussed the statements made by the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, regarding Spain and agreed that beyond the calls for consultations with ambassadors in the country, there may not be a real intention to break relations with Madrid.

For Arocha, the analysis from Spain is that Venezuela would lose more from a possible break in relations: “Analysts speak of 500 million dollars invested that would be at stake.” He stressed that according to figures that are handled, some 120 Spanish companies operate in Caracas, with the petrochemical company Repsol being one of the most important.
