Madrid Spain. Cuban activist Guillermo “Coco” Fariñas explained this Wednesday that he had been released after a “coerced interrogation” by Cuban State Security.
Upon arriving on the island after a tour of Europe, in which he denounced the situation of repression in the country, “Coco” Fariñas He was arrested at the José Martí International Airport.
As reported in a video shared on Facebookwas transferred to the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) unit at the airport, where he was interrogated and threatened by high-ranking government officials.
Accusations against “Coco” Fariñas after returning to Cuba
During the interrogation, the 2010 Sakharov Prize winner for Freedom of Thought was accused of his “subversive and counter-revolutionary activities” that he had carried out abroad during his tour of Europe.
He was accused of having achieved, in complicity with Spanish MEPs, that the high representative for foreign affairs of the European Parliament, Joseph Borrell, spoke out against Cuba and opened a public debate. This for them, the State Security, was “intolerable”.
He was also blamed for having influenced the president of the United States, Joe Biden, to leave Cuba out of the Summit of the Americas.
In addition, it was considered “inadmissible” that he managed to coordinate different generations of exiled opponents and businessmen in function of the freedom of Cuba.
Threats due to their activities abroad
He was warned that he will not be allowed to leave the city of Santa Clara anymore, “not to try.” Nor will they allow him to coordinate any dissident action, State Security threatened.
“It is the right of all of us who fight for democracy and freedom in Cuba to engage in politics in this way,” was the response of the leader of the United Anti-Totalitarian Forum (FANTU).
The news of the arrest had been released this Wednesday by his daughter, Haisa Fariñas, through Twitter.
