Technicians from the agencies of Olá, Toabré, La Pintada and Antón, in the province of Coclé, on threats and pest control in otoe, cassava and yam crops, were trained by the National Coordination of the Roots and Tubers Program of the National Directorate of Plant Health of the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA). This staff will train producers from different regions.
During the training, emphasis was placed on the threats of a large number of pests, some present in the national territory, which impact economic processes and others of a quarantine nature, which threaten national production.
Among the main pests that were exposed are the following: Mal Seco del Otoe (Xanthosoma sagittipholium), Lace bug (Corythucha gossypii), Bacterial spot or bacterial marginal necrosis (Xanthomonas campestris pv aracearum) among others; In addition, the main pests that affect the cassava crop were treated, such as the Whitefly (Bemisia tabaciI), Subterranean bug (Cyrthonemus bergi), Cuero de Sapo (Fitoplasma); the symptoms of the different pests, controls, integrated management and epidemiology.
The participants of this event shared their technical experiences for the benefit of the producers since in the province of Coclé there is an important production of roots and tubers, foods that are basic and the main source of calories for many people worldwide.
On this day, production farms were visited in the communities of Hijo de Dios, Olá, Chiguirí Abajo, El Jobo; in which samples of roots, foliage and soil were taken in cassava, yam, ñampí and otoe plots in order to prospect for diseases.
