The Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) stated that Brazil concluded its participation in the 2026 Winter Olympic Games with a flourish, to be held in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina. In a statement issued this Sunday (22), the organization stated that the culmination of the green-yellow campaign was Lucas Pinheiro Braathen’s gold in the giant slalom, the first Brazilian medal in an edition of the mega sporting event.
“We started well, increasing the number of participants, increasing the number of the delegation. And we literally closed with a flourish, winning Brazil’s first Olympic medal at the Winter Olympic Games. And then a gold medal”, celebrated the president of the COB, Marco La Porta.
“Brazil and I were not here at the Winter Olympic Games just to participate. We were here to make a difference, bring our colors, another mentality, another culture and celebrate this diversity of Brazil and sport. I think this gold represents the strength that exists in this diversity”, declared Lucas Pinheiro Braathen.
At the mega event held in Italy, which came to an end this Sunday, Brazil had its largest delegation to date in an edition of the Winter Olympic Games, with 14 athletes.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also celebrated the Cortina and Milan Winter Games. In a speech before the closing ceremony, IOC President Kirsty Coventry described the event as fantastic.
“In the last two weeks we have seen and experienced incredible Games. I have no words,” said Coventry, who presided over his first Games after his election last year.
