MADRID, Spain.- The Coast Guard on Monday suspended the search for five Cuban migrants who had been missing since last Saturday, the day they castaway the boat in which they were trying to reach the coast of Florida.

After the shipwreck, one person was rescued around 9:30 in the morning. This person had left Playa de Jaimanitas, Cuba, on November 13, with a large group of Cuban rafters. The survivor was initially rescued by another boat of 18 migrants, which also capsized, the information specifies.
In this second group there were 18 people, of whom four drowned and nine others, some of whom were wearing life jackets, were rescued by the coast guard Pablo Valent.
“Very rarely do we see people on these illegal trips wearing security gear,” said Richard Armstrong, deputy commanding officer for Key West Sector. “And that certainly saved their lives this time,” he added.
The Coast Guard sent its condolences to family and friends of “those presumed lost at sea.”
Since October 1, 2022, the US Coast Guard has intercepted more than 2,000 Cuban migrants at sea. While in the past fiscal year, 6,182 West Indians were detained during their sea crossing migratory.
