Coalition of entities launches campaign for more black people in parliaments

The Black Coalition for Rights, which brings together more than 200 organizations, will launch the “Quilombo in Parliaments Elections 2024” campaign. The launch will take place on Tuesday night (16) in Brasília. The initiative seeks to influence the municipal electoral dispute that will take place this year, contributing to increasing the number of black mayors and councilors committed to combating inequality and racism and to building a democratic project for the country.Coalition of entities launches campaign for more black people in parliaments

Founded in late 2019 during a meeting held in São Paulo, the Black Coalition for Rights has the involvement of different associations, non-governmental organizations, collectives, groups and institutions. Since its inception, it has denounced inequality and violence against black people, holding demonstrations throughout the country.

“The launch of the Quilombo nos Parlamentos Eleições 2024 campaign by the Black Coalition for Rights represents a significant milestone in the fight for racial justice in Brazil. By presenting a manifesto with guidelines, the Coalition reaffirms its commitment to expanding the presence of black leaders in municipal parliaments, seeking to elect candidates dedicated to combating racial inequalities and promoting democracy,” highlights Ingrid Farias, from the coordination of the Black Coalition for Rights.

“This movement not only promotes the political participation of black people, but also strengthens agendas such as racial, gender, climate and economic justice, which are essential for social transformation and democratic advancement in the country.”

During the launch of the campaign “Quilombo nos Parlamentos Eleições 2024″, a public debate will be held on the Brazilian political system and a manifesto will be presented with the main focuses of the Black Coalition for Rights in the electoral process.

Candidates from black people who have a focus on a variety of agendas, such as racial justice, reparations, gender justice, climate justice, and economic justice, will be mapped and supported. “The initiative will focus on the lives and daily lives of black people in cities and rural areas,” the Black Coalition for Rights said in a statement.

In 2022, in a similar campaign, 144 candidates were supported. Of these, 29 were elected, corresponding to 20% of the total. There were 11 elected to the Federal Chamber and 18 to different state assemblies.

Last year, the Black Coalition for Rights was responsible for a broad campaign, together with the Institute for the Defense of the Black Population, which called for the election of a black woman to the position of minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), which would be unprecedented in more than 130 years of existence of the highest court in the country.

At the time, there were discussions about the succession of Rosa Weber, who was about to retire. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva appointed former governor and former minister Flávio Dino to replace Weber.
