Activists from more than 40 organizations took advantage of the commemoration of the International Women’s Day to demand, yesterday, in a rally in front of the National Congress, the right to interrupt the pregnancy, through the approval of the three grounds in the draft Penal Code that the deputies have.
They recognized women victims of violence. With loud voices, feminist women, field workers, young professionals, the representatives of the Magaly Pineda Feminist Forum and the organizations that make up the Coalition for the Health and Life of Women intervened this March 8, Women’s Day, to read a declaration called the “Plaza de las Mujeres”: an action to honor the women who have lost their lives due to violence and the lack of laws that guarantee medical attention and protection.

They “reminded legislators of their responsibility to prevent other deaths, with the approval of the Law that will create the Comprehensive System for the prevention, care, punishment and reparation of violence against women and girls”, which has been stalled for years.
With butterflies, drawn in light green, they reiterated their claims, highlighted the struggles and resistance of Dominican women for their rights. They highlighted the life of Salomé Ureña, Evangelina Rodríguez, Florinda Soriano Muñoz (Mama Tingó), Juana Saltitopa, Sagrario Díaz, María Trinidad Sánchez, Casandra Damirón, the Mirabal Sisters: Patria, Minerva and María Teresa, among others.
