Coalition agreed on project for social security reform

What does the government deal with?

This Monday the representatives of the different parties that make up the government coalition reached an agreement for the presentation of the bill that promotes the social security reform.

The meeting, which took place in the Executive Tower, was headed by President Luis Lacalle Pou and was attended by Julio María Sanguinetti (Colorado Party), Pablo Iturralde (National Party), Guido Manini Ríos (Open Council), Pablo Mieres (Party Independent) and Daniel Peña (People’s Party). In addition, the lawyer Rodolfo Saldain, president of the Commission of Experts on Social Security Reform, and one of the drafters of the project, was also present.

“We agreed with the partners of the Government Coalition on the bill to reform social security. On Thursday it will be signed by the ministers in the Council. A necessary, sustainable and fair reform”, Lacalle wrote on his Twitter account.

Some details

Leaving the event, party leaders gave their impressions. Pablo Iturralde stated at the press conference that “for approximately 15 years we have been hearing about the changes in social security. There is an ethical duty of the political system to give an answer to this. This is the answer given by the coalition. We are going to be expectant to see the response that the Broad Front gives to the citizens to solve a problem that we would have to face in the short term if we do not modify it”.

The leader announced that all those who are already retired today, “will not have any change in their retirement” and recalled that “those who already have acquired rights, will not be modified.”

“This regime begins to apply in the year 2036. It was originally planned for the year 2027, but it will not start before 2036. In addition, it will not apply to those born before the year 1973. And the regime begins, I repeat, in in 2036,” Iturralde said.

For his part, Minister Pablo Mieres highlighted the agreement and said that it “ratifies the conviction of moving forward with a change.” In addition, the leader of the Independent Party regretted that the Broad Front did not come into contact on the subject.

“The Broad Front is going to know about the project when it reaches Parliament and that is when it will be time for us to have a dialogue with a party that represented almost 40% in the 2019 election, we hope that in Parliament it will be time for there to be suggestions,” he said.

«People who are 49 years old and older will not have a change in their retirement age, it is from 1973. These people keep the system in force. If they have 30 years of contribution, the criteria that were established regarding the replacement rate are maintained,” he added. wednesday.
