CNTD: 2022 was negative for DR workers

“The situation of the workers is precarious,” says Jacobo Ramos, president of the National Confederation of Dominican Workers

The president of the National Confederation of Dominican Workers (CNTD), Jacobo Ramos, affirmed yesterday that 2022 has been a negative year for workers, due to the fact that inflation has decreased the purchasing power of wages.

“We believe that inflation is the factor that has burdened the Dominican working class the most and work must be done to recover the purchasing power of wages,” said Ramos.

He considered that the inflationgenerated by the international economic situation, has produced that the programs of the Government have been insufficient for the workers.

“The situation of the workers is precarious and that is why the president Luis Abinader He has raised the need for wage increases to recover the level of inflation,” he said.
He said that jobs in tourism and free zones have recovered, but wages are miserable in those sectors.

The cost of basic products is very high, while education and health are precarious, he indicated
that anti-union practices still persist in the employer sector that limit the ability to negotiate collective contracts in companies.

A negative point this year, he said, is the suspension of health services by medical societies.

He indicated that he is working on the salary and decent work pact that the Ministry of Labor has raised, which is in the discussion phase, despite the fact that the employer sector said that it was willing to voluntarily raise wages.
