CNP Caracas indicated that, of the 204 attacks recorded so far in 2024, 102 were evident after the July elections

The National College of Journalists (CNP) The Caracas branch reported this Friday, August 30, that from January to August 2024, there have been 204 attacks on journalists, other press workers, and the media.

Edgar Cárdenas, secretary general of the CNP Caracas, warned that between July 28 and August 29, 102 cases were reported, which represents 50% of the attacks on the press and, in this regard, indicates that of these cases in the last 32 days, 50 cases of harassment, 28 attempts to prevent journalistic coverage, 18 arbitrary detentions and 15 deportations of those responsible for the electoral process were reported.

Of the 18 journalists detained in this eight-month period, 12 of them were arbitrarily arrested while covering different news events and the other six: Roland Carreño, Carlos Julio Rojas, Alejandro Camero, Gabriel González, Luis López and Biagio Pilieri for their links to political and social activism.

Cárdenas lamented the critical situation facing the press in Venezuela, stating that the persecution of journalists and media outlets has increased.

“We have been denouncing that there is a State policy that seeks to silence information, which prevents society from receiving pertinent and timely informative content,” he said.

He said there is an increase in the arrest of journalists because they justify their arrest on the basis of alleged crimes of inciting hatred, terrorism and criminal association, which criminalizes journalistic work, he added.

He said that “Immersed in the defenseless situation in which we journalists find ourselves, fear takes over, because there are no guarantees to be able to fulfill the task of reporting freely.”

The full CNP report is as follows:

Deportations (15), cancellation of journalist’s passport (2), harassment (129), attempted theft of equipment (1), closure of radio stations (15), theft of equipment (39), threats (13), closure of radio program (5), arbitrary arrests (18), damage to media headquarters (2), intimidation (50), coverage impediments (28), physical attacks (7), deletion of recorded material (7), damage to journalists’ property (1), campaigns against regional union directors of the CNP (3), stigmatizing campaigns against journalists (2), blocked news sites (12), unjustified dismissal of journalist from government entity (1), closure of TV program (1), exit from cable TV channel (1), and verbal attacks (5).
