CNP Caracas believes that the reform of the Journalism Law seeks to deprofessionalize the union

Edgar Cárdenas commented that the law currently allows community journalism and that this cannot be the argument to modify it. He expressed that the CNP believes that what this initiative seeks is “to ignore critical journalism”

The general secretary of the Caracas sectional National Association of Journalists (CNP), Édgar Cárdenas, considers that the National Assembly’s announcement to reform the current Law on the Exercise of Journalism has other interests other than giving prominence to so-called community journalism and that today today they seek to give it the name of “alternative”.

Cárdenas criticized that the CNP had not been invited to those meetings announced on July 13 by the Vice President of the People’s Power and Communication Commission of the National Assembly, Carola Chávez, who stressed that mainly the reform of the legal tool that regulates the country’s journalistic activity was based on the recognition of those who did not study at the universities, calling them “journalists from the university of life”.

In this sense, he referred in the program “Reveille” of FM Center that in the third article of the current law work is allowed in communities, scientific cases and other places, for which he stressed that the right of these people to exercise the profession by trade is respected and he emphasized community radio stations who work without the CNP having any objection.

Although he believes that it is important to study the regulations to make changes, especially in the protection of those who practice journalism, in his opinion what this possible reform seeks is to “disregard critical journalism” and that there are policies that begin to regulate information or avoid the proliferation of independent media.

He also warned that it is likely that the membership and even the protection of the source will be put in danger.

Cárdenas described that the situation is “delicate” above all due to the attacks suffered by journalists and media outlets in the streets, for which he stressed that the CNP must know details of the reform. For this reason, he commented that from the Legislative Power they handle the issue secretly and do not even present drafts to present.

He reproached Deputy Chávez for saying that they would review the articles to see which ones were likely to be changed. She thinks that they want to give recognition to “alternative journalism” and eliminate the association. For the secretary of the CNP Caracas that is “irresponsible” because it represents a regression of the profession and he gave the example of leading midwives to be recognized in the College of Physicians.

He stressed that the State, together with the gremko, must guarantee “coherent action” in order to curb disinformation in the country because this situation favors no one, since people need to be duly informed to make appropriate decisions.

He affirmed that the entire journalistic union, together with the CNP, should not allow the deprofessionalization of the exercise to exist and wondered what could happen to the students who are currently studying social communication at universities. “You can’t get a job with ideology,” he snapped.
