“Closing of universities is a slap that Ortega gives the youth,” say opponents

After the recent cancellation of the legal status of three other Nicaraguan universities, reaching almost 30 outlawed study centers, opponents condemned this action and affirmed that the intention of the Sandinista dictatorship is “to once again slap the Nicaraguan youth of the present and future.”

The houses of study that the Ministry of the Interior canceled are the Metropolitan University (UNIMET)the University of Northern Nicaragua (UNN) and the Adventist University of Nicaragua (UNADENIC).

For Haydee Castillohuman rights defender and president of the Las Segovias Leadership Institute (ILLS), this action shows the “panic” that the Ortega government has towards the youth and students.

He assures that the fear of Ortega and Murillo is because they know that “in the history of Nicaragua, youth and students are and have been incidents in public policy entities.”

He also pointed out that the onslaught of the dictatorship is a denial of the fundamental right to education, “and this that even the young people of those private universities had to pay for, because we do not have state universities (referring to the UNN) as in the case of Nueva Segovia».

“Once again, I believe that it is becoming clear to the people of Nicaragua that this – the Ortega dictatorship – is a regime that offers neither a present nor a future, much less stability or peace or tranquility to the Nicaraguan people, as has been their rhetoric. », he stressed.

Referring to the peace and tranquility that the Ortega government proclaims daily, Castillo said that peace for the country “means being able to go to school, study, have a job, eat, sow the land and do that without persecution, but Right now what Nicaragua has the least is peace of mind and access to its fundamental rights because we are being stripped of everything.”

“Nicaragua is in mourning every time a university is beheaded”

The opponent remarked that the new onslaught “is an annihilation of rights in Nicaragua, where the only ones who retain privileges are the dictatorship, her family, and those close to her; and it is unfortunate because each day that passes, a school year, a semester counts in the life of each young person and more in the north that it costs to earn a daily bread».

Regarding the University of Northern Nicaragua (UNN), included in the list of headless academic institutions, the human rights defender recalled that both northern Nicaragua and the Caribbean Coast have been historically forgotten territories by all governments.

“There is a historical lag, structural poverty, the educational deficit is very high, and we tried to fill that deficit many times, from the projects that non-governmental organizations undertook, building schools, preschools, and in another way, too, private universities do it. , as is the case of the UNN”, he emphasized.

He stressed that the north of Nicaragua is a territory where young people do not have the resources to go to Managua, León, where the main universities are concentrated, since they are regions that do not even have access to social security.

For his part, the former politician and university leader Max Sherry He affirmed that the dictator Daniel Ortega continues focused on closing all independent spaces, and “these actions threaten freedom of thought.”

“There is also a bit of insensitivity because access to education for young people who live outside Managua is being limited, which leads the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega to commit another crime against humanity that lives thinking of controlling power at all costs. , in this case through the space independent of thoughts».

The Nicaraguan dictatorship continues its wave of repression against non-profit organizations. Among the universities that have been canceled to date are UCAN, HUSIPAM, Rubén Darío University, from Carazo; UPINIC, Paulo Freire. URACCAN and BICU.

It should be noted that since 2018, the Ortega and Murillo administration has canceled more than three thousand organizations, including more than twenty universities, under the application of repressive laws.
