Clinics will provide medication to people with diabetes

People with diabetes who consult at the Hospital de Clínicas will receive medication for their treatment.

Within the framework of the implementation process of the National Diabetes Program in the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the UNA, a talk was held on the management model that will guarantee the care and treatment of people with diabetes.

From now on, the patient of the Medical Clinic, Endocrinology, Gynecology-Obstetrics, Pediatrics or any of the surgical departments, who suffers from diabetes, will be able to withdraw the medicines and supplies from the Hospital de Clínicas Social Pharmacy, without having to resort to another center to receive your diabetes medication.

This occurs within the framework of an agreement between the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare and the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the UNA, through the National Diabetes Program, which allows the Health Information System (HIS) load and unify the data and thus have a record of patients with type I or II or gestational diabetes in each service and accordingly plan the amount of medications and supplies that they need for their treatment.

In this regard, the director of the National Diabetes Program, Dr. Doris Royg, said that this is a great step since Hospital Escuela was not part of the chain of hospitals in which said program is established. “Something that is extremely important to emphasize is the right of the patient -based on a diabetes law- to have all the treatment as it corresponds, which means having a multidisciplinary team that provides information and education to the patient, that respects their fears and beliefs and take into account the reality of the patient on the one hand and on the other, that he can receive the corresponding medications.

Talking about type I and Gestational diabetes means that the patient has to control their blood glucose level. He said that a patient with type I diabetes should check his blood glucose 4 to 5 times a day. “For this we have test strips and glucometer and insulin, since the cost of these medications and supplies (needles for pens, lancets, glucagon) represents an annual investment of around 20 million guaraníes. And that is a cost that is guaranteed for the patient with type I diabetes. Here at the Hospital de Clínicas there are around 40 patients with this type of diabetes, who, being treated here, will be able to access medication”, projection.

For type II diabetes, the patient must receive their oral antidiabetic drugs or insulin as indicated and the most important are pregnant women with gestational diabetes who also have to have a glucometer and reactive strips to be able to make optimal decisions and better control so that the pregnancy arrives to a good end.

The agreement, in the process of implementation, was signed last year thanks to the political will of the Minister of Health, Dr. Julio Borba, and hospital and university authorities such as the Rector of the UNA, Prof. Dr. Zully Vera; but they depended on the bidding processes of the MSPyBS for their correct and effective execution.

For which a management team has been formed that has a management modality based on the analysis of the data obtained from the computer systems. “In other words, we can view the data loaded in the Hospital de Clínicas from the MSP and see if it is consistent or not with the order made for medicines and supplies from patients with diabetes who consult or are hospitalized in the different services. And being able to offer them that means starting to work in what is the national health system with a firm stewardship from the MSP in being able to articulate the different subsectors and that finally our patients do not get complicated and have a better quality of life”, Dr. Royg stressed.

Management model. The methodology is managerial, through a work table that has the necessary managerial tools for data analysis and the number of requests to be made to the National Diabetes Program. Through a training and socialization process of the management guides that involved the heads of the room and the chair who have a digital guide at hand so that they can socialize and be part of spaces such as joint consultation sessions with presentation of clinical cases , in order to learn from the reality of each patient.
