Climate change will be highlighted at the National Archives festival

Global debates on climate change will be present at the 10th edition of the Exhibition Archive in Posterorganized by the National Archives (AN), secretariat of the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services (MGI), which noted the inclusion of this issue on the agenda of public, private and community archives.Climate change will be highlighted at the National Archives festival

The theme Memories of the Earth in Archive Films emerged for the 2025 exhibition, based on meetings such as the 16th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP16), between October 21st and November 1st, 2024, in Cali, Colombia; and the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will take place in November this year in Brazil, in Belém do Pará.

The general director of the National Archive, Ana Flávia Magalhães Pinto, told Brazil Agencythat archives are directly connected to environmental agendas, especially in this current scenario of climate collapse. She recalled the tragedy that occurred last year in Rio Grande do Sul.

“Today’s institutions, in addition to being vulnerable to catastrophes, as recently happened in Rio Grande do Sul, archives and their subjects are strategic in contributing to the construction of sustainable futures for all forms of life. In this edition, the choice of the theme “Memories of the Earth” seeks to overcome the dichotomy between human beings and nature and mobilized archival films that make these connections clear,” he stated.

“There is a great concern with environmental issues and climate change, with indigenous, riverside and quilombola peoples, considered protectors of the environment”, added the general coordinator of Institutional Relations at AN and executive coordinator of the Festival, Franciele Oliveira, in an interview with Brazil Agency.

The opening of the Festival will be at the headquarters of the National Archives, in the center of Rio de Janeiro, on the 29th and 30th of January. Next (31), the ceremony will be at the MGI headquarters, on the Esplanada dos Ministérios, in Brasília. According to Franciele Oliveira, the start scheduled for January is also an allusion to the 187th anniversary of the National Archives. In total, there will be 52 works, including short and feature films.

Schedule

Environmental transformations, their impacts and the way of survival, all of this will be shown in ten in-person film screening events and debates in locations across the five regions of Brazil from February to June. The exhibition times in the cities of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brasília (DF), Natal (RN), São Cristóvão (SE), Porto Alegre and Santa Maria (RS), Manaus (AM), Salvador (BA), will be published on AN’s digital channels.

The Festival program will also include the Collections Exhibition, which brings a selection of archive films on a platform streaming for consideration by the Popular Jury and, between February 3 and June 30, the screening of films on Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC) channels.

Franciele Oliveira also said that the works were selected by a collective curator. This is new because in previous editions it was done individually or at most in pairs. “This year we have a new proposal for a collective curatorship, made up of six members chosen by the National Archives based on their expertise in cinema and cultural and artistic production, but also in accordance with our partnerships signed to hold the festival this year. year”, he informed.

For the general director of the National Archives, the festival model in 2025 is a way of popularizing and expanding knowledge about archival works.

“We bet on this innovation for exactly this purpose, to popularize and democratize productions that have incalculable value for the Brazilian people. The image of archives as static institutions is the opposite of their potential and even their mission. In this tenth edition, we maintained activities traditionally carried out at the National Archives unit in Rio de Janeiro. At the same time, we mobilize a network of partners, starting with collective curation, with which we seek to overcome geographic and institutional distances. The opportunity to show the films on several public TV channels, through coordination with EBC, further enhances these connections, it is worth highlighting. This is essential to democratize the understanding of the role of archives, professionals, users, collections and productions resulting from these multiple interactions that occur precisely thanks to the existence of this dynamic itself”, he reported.

Season

The Festival will continue throughout the first half of 2025 and will also feature the Lanterninha Mágica Workshop, the film conservation workshop, the Faz Escola Archive and will end in June 2025 with the Film Awards from Mostra Acervos and the Mostra Magic Lantern.

“The Lanterninha Mágica workshop is a production of archive films in schools in the State of Rio de Janeiro”, revealed the coordinator, excited about promoting it to the students.

Public

The organization believes that the festival will reach everyone interested in the themes, cinema, art and other audiovisual and sound collections; cultural producers and producers of audiovisual content; users and file users; researchers; public, private and community archives professionals; and cinema and archival film; in addition to public authorities; social movements; public and private schools; and public and private higher education institutions. Franciele Oliveira will be watched by around 1 million people.

“Our expectations seem megalomaniacal, but they are well-founded based on the previous edition, when we reached more than 400,000 households, when we signed a partnership to show on EBC channels, as a public network. If we consider that each household has more than one resident and sometimes families, who watch the programming together, it is possible to estimate 1 million participants for this year’s edition, because in addition to the EBC channels, we increased the number of channels this year past and we will have this itinerant character”, he commented, betting on the renewal of the public since the festival will reach cities outside the capitals.

“THE streaming and TV channels are languages that reach a young audience, a technology audience that did not reach in other years. Considering these characteristics, we can say, yes, that there is a change in the public, in the sense of covering more territories, more audiences”, he pointed out.

The intention of promoting the International Exhibition involves valuing archive films; audiovisual and sound collections held by archival institutions; promoting and organizing debates on current public policies for preserving these collections; exchange of experiences and good practices on the production of archival films; in addition to the dissemination of the National Archives collection. Furthermore, the agents involved in the meeting will encourage the audiovisual production of archive films and the appreciation of professionals working in this field.

“The biggest concern of the National Archive is precisely that the Brazilian population has access to the audiovisual and sound collections that are documentary heritage, so it is to disseminate and promote the preservation of these collections and make sure they reach the population and also promote this stimulation of films from archive, which are films, which has at its base these collections for the language of the seventh art, cinema and audiovisual”, added Franciele Oliveira.

Support

To hold the Festival, the National Archive has a partnership with Dataprev; the Audiovisual Secretariat of the Ministry of Culture; from the EBC; from the Social Participation and Diversity Offices of MGI and MPO, with the Cine Bloco K project; the Rio Branco Institute, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE); from the Municipal Public Archive of São Cristóvão; from the Federal University of Amazonas; the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul – Campus Porto Alegre; from the Federal University of Santa Maria, Leão Etíope do Méier and Zumvi Arquivo Afro Fotográfico.
