Climate change, the fight that united Latin America at the UN

In a world involved in a spiral of crises of various kinds, Latin America arrived at the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations Organization, held this week, with an expectation as to what their position would be, now that Leftist ideology dominates the political spectrum.

However, regardless of their position, the countries of Latin America were in unison on two of the most representative problems today: the fight against climate change and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Although all mentioned to a lesser or greater extent the climatic aspect, it was Gustavo Petro, from Colombia, who based the central point of his presentation and on his premiere before the plenary, and criticized the way in which it has been developed “the war on drugs” and, in his opinion, the devastating defects on the environment and biodiversity that the country boasts.

Another of the leaders who also made explicit reference was Luis Arce, from Bolivia. Among his 14 requests, the president denounced that the climate crisis “requires responsibility and harmony between human beings and nature and not usury”. Also, warned of possible ecological collapse.

From this point, to the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, He offered some lines in which he defended his conservation policy and dismissed the accusations about deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. “Let us not forget that this region is home to more than 20 million inhabitants, including indigenous”, said the president.

The war in Ukraine was also the other common topic by which the Latin American region asked for dialogue, peace and the resolution of the armed conflict, in force since the end of February.

Though Andres Lopez Obrador President of Mexico, was not present at the global meeting, but the country’s foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, did, who in the speech before the plenary session, proposed a high-level diplomatic delegation to reduce tensions and mediate between the two countries belligerent.

Ebrard explained that the intention is to create a diplomatic channel that complements those that already exist to interact with the parties in conflict, reduce tensions and channel mediation.

This delegation would be made up of the Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, and Pope Francis, among other world leaders, detailed the UN web portal.

The Secretary of Foreign Relations of the Mexican Government also pointed out that “already submitted” your proposal to the parties involved, “with the sole purpose of being able to contribute, as an impartial actor and in good faith”.

Finally, migration in the region was also one of the messages on which the leaders agreed, among those, those of Costa Rica and Ecuador.

Within the framework of the world event, the UN agency in charge of food, FAO, proposed four lines of action to combat concerns about a hunger crisis in Latin America. Among the proposals are: provide support to vulnerable people through social protection systems and facilitate the trade of agricultural products and inputs to avoid stopping production.

Likewise, there is also talk of guaranteeing family farmers access to seeds and fertilizers, among others.

The FAO also asks invest in climate-resilient agriculture to reverse the climate crisis.
