The plant, which has been key for electricity generation since 1975, has also been a constant source of pollution due to the high sulfur content of the fuel oil it uses.
According to a study conducted by the organization Climate Initiative, nearby communities, such as El Llano and Teocalco, have faced years of exposure to dangerous levels of sulfur dioxide.
This contamination has been identified as a factor that seriously affects the health of more than 120,000 people in the region.
Beyond energy: a comprehensive change
The announcement was not limited to the change of fuel at the plant. Sheinbaum presented an ambitious plan to turn Tula into a model of sustainability.
Among the most notable initiatives is the creation of a space for the circular economy on nearby land. This project will include a factory that will transform organic waste into charcoal pellets.
“All the garbage in that area is going to be collected and garbage treatment plants are going to be built so that it can be reused in other things. We are going to turn this city into the cleanest city and with the best quality of life than any city that has ever existed.” in our country,” explained Sheinbaum
In addition, it is planned to clean up the Tula River and all its tributaries.
