The director of the Institute of National Aqueducts and Sewers (IDAAN) Juan Antonio Ducreut, said on Radio Panama that the damage to a 24-inch pipe was caused by the work of the Eight Carriles Consortium in the Burunga sector and that the IDAAN crews supporting the repair of this damage.
This fact, added to the electrical damage suffered by the Mendoza water treatment plant that operates the Panama Canal, resulted in the Ministry of Education suspending classes this Wednesday, March 15, in the districts of Arraiján and Chorrera.
Ducreut reported that the Mendoza water treatment plant managed to restart the distribution of water at around 12:30 am today and it is expected that the damage to the 24-inch pipe will finish its repair in the morning.
He stressed that in the vital points of Arraiján and Burunga tankers have been sent to supply the population.
Work on the pipeline in the Burunga area to restore potable water service is expected to be completed before noon.
Regarding possible solutions to the problem of the water service in West Panama, Ducreut mentioned that the new Howard plant is at 70% construction and the expansion of the Mendoza plant is planned to improve distribution to the population.
