The Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM) will change its name and will be called Metropolitan Police. Mayor Ricardo Nunes’ decision for the change happens after the Federal Supreme Court (STF) decides on Thursday (20) that the municipal guards can act in ostensive policingas the Military Police do.

The “police power” of the Metropolitan Civil Guard was practically happened in the day-to-day city. But the matter was in court since the Attorney’s Office of São Paulo appealed from a decision of the São Paulo Court of Justice (TJ-SP), which prohibited such behavior.

Until then, the role of municipal guards concerned the patrimonial security of public facilities and the preservation of citizens’ rights.
With the decision of the Supreme Court, the Metropolitan Civil Guard can carry out arrests in the act, do ostensible and community policing (with personal and magazine searches), but has no research power. The staff of the Metropolitan Civil Guard of São Paulo is 7,500 guards.
