The Federation of Civil Construction Workers of Peru called for a national march scheduled for October 24, in protest of the growing insecurity and violence that affects their union.
The mobilization arises in response to the alarming murder of 24 general secretaries and other workers nationwide, crimes that, according to the union, are attributable to criminal gangs that operate in the sector.
César Soberón, representative of the Civil Construction Federation, stated that workers demand that the Government take more forceful measures, such as strengthening police intelligence and a reform in union registries, which currently facilitate the infiltration of criminal organizations.
The march will not only feature the participation of workers from Lima, but protesters from various regions of the country are also expected to join the protest, with an estimate of around 200,000 union members.
This movement has received support from other sectors, such as transporters and warehouse workers, who have also been victims of extortion and acts of violence, which highlights the magnitude of the problem facing Peruvian society.
The criticism of the Government is forceful. The Federation questions the lack of concrete actions, especially in the proper use of the law against urban terrorism.
In addition to demanding a change in security policies, the workers plan to deliver a memorial to the Executive and Legislature, urging the authorities to take urgent measures in the face of this serious situation.
