It was 20 minutes past midnight when the Santa Cruz anthem sounded at El Cristo Redentor. There, the second vice president of the Civic Committee for Santa Cruz, Stello Cochamanidis, accompanied the start of a 24-hour civic strike called by the Interinstitutional Committee. The demand for the completion of the Population and Housing Census in 2023 motivates citizen protest.

Together with the civic authority, a hundred members of the Cruceñista Youth Union accompanied the start of the protest at the Christ the Redeemer roundabout.

“The struggles are born for the benefit of the country,” stressed Cochamanidis. “Today, here, once again we have to fight and fight for what belongs to us,” remarked the civic representative.

The demand requires to the Government the call for technical work tables to speed up the census.

After 12:30 at night, traffic was scarce on busy routes such as the second ring road.

In parallel formunemployment too started in other parts of the city as in Cristo Redentor avenue, at the height of the fourth ring, in the Villa Primero de Mayo, the Plan Tres Mil roundabout or on the double lane to La Guardia by kilometer 9.

At this last point there were some moments of tension between the vehicles that were returning to their homes and the blockers that closed the road. After a few moments of discussion, the motorized vehicles were allowed to pass before putting the tires back on.

During the day, various public institutions such as Segip, Entel or National Taxes They indicated, through statements, that will keep their offices open to attend to the population that approaches them.

The police were deployed to protect State institutions such as the INE. A dozen uniformed men were stationed before midnight to guard the building.

A police convoy departed from the Departmental Police Command and toured the second ring road asking citizens to remove the cords and tires used to prevent vehicular traffic.
