Civic Forum rejects the appointment of the TSJ magistrates for their lack of independence

The representatives of the NGO Foro Cívico consider that with the new directive of the highest court in the country, the policy of subordination of the Judicial Power to the Executive Power continues, as well as its ideological occupation

The non-governmental organization Civic Forum rejected the appointment of the new magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), considering that it does not comply with the provisions of the Constitution, due to its lack of independence and because it does not contribute to the re-institutionalization of the Venezuelan Judiciary.

In a statement published this Saturday, April 30, the social sectors grouped in this NGO consider that with the new directive of the highest court in the country, the policy of subordination of the Judicial Power to the Executive Power continues, as well as its ideological occupation.

It was further indicated that the opportunity to form a TSJ based on the guarantee of judicial independence was wasted, affecting the possibilities for Venezuelans to travel a path that brings us all together in a common and plural project for the future.

“This decision ignores the urgent need to build, within the framework of the Constitution, with the participation of all, the country’s judicial institutions, taking into account the professional qualifications, honorability and impartiality of the aspiring judges or magistrates,” Foro explained. Civic.

Civic Forum affirms that the decision of the administration of Nicolás Maduro offers “dark signs about the exercise of justice, with very serious consequences for the future of the nation.”

Civic Forum limited that “it will not be passive spectators” before the election of the magistrates and that they will continue fighting “in the arena of the present realities of Venezuela, in order to achieve the indispensable democratization even gradually, if it is not possible to fully achieve it in the current political context.”

On April 5, several members of the Civic Forum held a meeting with Maduro in the Miraflores Palace, as part of the national dialogue agenda maintained by his administration with political, social, economic, religious and cultural sectors of the country. In another meeting with officials, emphasis was placed on “priorities and emergencies in the field of the health system”; as well as the defense of civil liberties, private property and the possibility of negotiating responsibly in terms of legislation and the reforms that are needed in financial and economic matters.

In this sense, in the letter released by the NGO, the appointment of both the new TSJ and the Executive Director of the Judiciary and the Inspector General of Courts are questioned because they do not respond to the suitability and judicial independence.

“They do not give guarantees that the reforms that the justice system urgently needs to serve the needs of the population, especially the victims, will be introduced. and for economic recovery and entrepreneurship; they are inconsistent with the commitments expressed by the government and the 2020 National Assembly to seek agreements to resolve the current political crisis and the administration of justice and implies ignoring the urgent need to build, with the participation of all, the country’s judicial institutions” .
