The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, sanctioned this Friday (27), the law that changes the counting of the workload of teachers in the municipal education network in the classroom, now being done in minutes.
The purpose is to recover the 400 minutes of classes that are no longer given due to the fact that the class is 50 minutes long. Previously, the 50 minutes were counted as 1 hour/class. With the change, approved by the Rio City Council, teachers will have to teach 24 more classes per month.
The special license for education professionals, known as premium license, allowed municipal employees to take a 3-month leave of absence every 5 years. With the approval of the new law, this measure was extinguished.
With the new complementary law, the vacation system for education professionals will also change. Currently, education professionals are entitled to vacations in the months of January and July, along with students. From now on, teachers will only be entitled to vacation after 365 days of work. In this way, professionals who have just joined the municipal education network will have to work in January and July, even during the school break.
The new complementary law 186/24 also modifies the probationary period for municipal employees. The new law increases the probationary period from two to three years.
Approval
The bill that changes the work and hiring regime in municipal employees was approved by councilors of Rio de Janeiro on December 5th. Among the main changes is the end of the bonus leave, granted every five years to the city’s public servants.
Before, at the end of November, the Rio City Council decided to postpone the vote of the bill, under pressure from education professionals, who occupied the Chamber gallery, opposing the measure.
Teachers
The State Union of Education Professionals (Sepe) informed that it will analyze the next steps, including the legal issue, to try to block the new law.
“The new Complementary Law was sanctioned by Mayor Eduardo Paes in total disagreement with municipal employees, especially education professionals, who demanded that the mayor not sanction the infamous PLC, approved at the drop of a hat by the City Council.”
The union called professionals from the municipal network to the general assembly on February 8th “So that we can discuss our mobilization against the municipal government’s attacks on Education and employees”, says the entity.
