Citizenship and responsibility are themes of Digital Education Week

“The pandemic made us re-emerge into the media environment, made us bring technology to the classroom, act in the digital environment and in a very abrupt way,” said Anderson Passos, president of the National Union of Municipal Education Directors ( Undime), from the Bahia section of the entity. The Brazilian Media Education Week is a forum for discussions and exchange of experiences that seeks to encourage the use of media in a critical way, providing students and educators with tools to work in the classroom in the context of new technologies.

Passos highlighted the experiences that occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic in relation to the use of digital media. “How many barriers has education broken to reach the most distant corners of this country?”

The municipal leader also addressed the topic of responsibility and criticism in the use of digital media in education.

They were also in live Mariana de Almeida Filizola, general coordinator of media education at the Communication Secretariat (Secom) of the Presidency of the Republic; Larissa Ebeling, head of projects at the General Coordination of Technology and Innovation of the Ministry of Education (MEC); Roni Miranda Vieira, Secretary of Education of Paraná and the National Council of Education Secretaries (Consed), and Adauto Soares, coordinator of the communication and information sector at UNESCO Brasil.

Roni Miranda recalled that with the pandemic came the perception that students, especially teenagers, had a great command of technology. But they often consume fake newswhich can even lead to the practice of cyberbullying.

“Often, the teacher in the classroom ‘competes’ with the student and their smartphone in their hands. Sometimes the student may confront the teacher with information from a fake news. Therefore, he needs to learn to verify the legitimacy of the information provided”, he stated.

Larissa Ebeling highlighted that the Brazilian Media Education Week initiative is part of the National Strategy for Connected Schools (Enec), launched last year. “Enec is in collaboration with the country’s education system and aims to guarantee connectivity for pedagogical purposes to all public basic education schools in the country, with the aim of digital citizenship.

She also said that the initiative does not only seek “physical” connectivity of schools, but aims to stimulate reflection and production of content generated in the digital environment.

Secom coordinator, Mariana Filizola, informed that the website of the eventwith a repository containing various lesson plans, books and newsletters aimed at specific audiences. He also said that each interested party can register their activity onlineparticipate in good practice workshops and discuss citizenship in the digital environment and journalism.

The Brazilian Media Education Week takes place within the scope of UNESCO’s global event on Media and Information Literacy, recalled Roni Miranda. In its first initiative, last year, there were more than 400 initiatives carried out at the same time, in 24 states across the country, with an estimated audience of 54 thousand people.

Teachers, students, members of civil society organizations and collectives can participate. Registration must be made using the form available on website from Secom and each experience will integrate a national agenda on the topic.
