“This Saturday the presidents (civics of the country) arrive so that we can meet, so that we can coordinate, to give support to Santa Cruz, the I support this measure that is so important and that has come to permeate the entire country,” said Rómulo Calvo, civic president of Santa Cruz, on Friday night (and the 14th day of indefinite unemployment).
Calvo stated that not only the civic of the nine departments are in favor of the census in 2023, who announced an indefinite strike and a hunger strike for this Monday; he pointed out that deputies and senators have also made their support known. He congratulated the authorities who “listened to the people, who want a census in 2023.”
On the technical table that will take place in Trinidad, the Santa Cruz citizen recalled that they have been asking for it for three to four months and lamented that the Government had politicized the census. “I hope there is no political interference to take away that dream of the Bolivian population of having a census in 2023,” Calvo said.
He also expressed his confidence in the work carried out by the Uagrm in terms of the technical proposal that it carries, on behalf of the Interinstitutional Committee for the Promotion of the Census.
Regarding the possibility that an agreement could not be reached in Trinidad, the civic indicated that it will be because of “lack of government will”, the one who must “assume all the responsibility”.
“As long as we don’t have a date, the strike continues”, he stated, but also congratulated the “sacrifice and dedication” of the Santa Cruz population, which has been on indefinite unemployment for 14 days.
Calvo once again referred to the violence and confrontation of supporters of the government who come to Santa Cruz, added to the police protection that they display.
