In the last year, the perception of insecurity rose in the inhabitants of at least eight cities in the country; Instead, in 17 locations, Mexicans said they felt safer and in another 65 it remained the same, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
According to the National Survey of Urban Public Security (ENSU) for the fourth quarter of 2022, during December 2022, in towns such as Campeche, 66% of its inhabitants expressed feeling less safe than a year before, which means an increase of 26.5 points. percentage, compared to 39.5% registered in December 2021.
Likewise, in the city of Colima, the perception of insecurity went from 66.5% in December 2021 to 75.6% for the last month of last year; in León, Guanajuato, it changed from 75% to 82.2%, in the same period.
While in the Milpa Alta mayor’s office, in Mexico City, the figure grew from 53.8% to 68.9; in General Escobedo, Nuevo León, it changed from 44% to 55.5%; Querétaro from 39.7% to 55.7%, the same as in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, where the feeling of insecurity rose from 26.6% to 34.6% and in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, going from 33.5% to 57.7 percent.

At the national level, the figure for the perception of insecurity stood at 64.2% at the end of 2022, a drop of 1.6 points compared to 65.8% a year earlier. This measurement also implied a slight reduction compared to the third quarter of 2022, when the index was 64.4 percent.
The cities with the highest percentage of population that feel insecure were: Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Irapuato, Naucalpan de Juárez, Ecatepec de Morelos and Ciudad Obregón, with 97.7, 93.3, 92.6, 89.7, 89.6 and 89.2%, respectively.
In contrast, the cities where the perception of insecurity is lower were: San Pedro Garza García, Los Mochis, Benito Juárez, Los Cabos, Tampico and Cuajimalpa de Morelos, with 8.1, 15.0, 19.4, 20.9, 22.1 and 22.3%, in that order.
Inegi figures detail that during December 2022, women expressed feeling less safe (69.9%) than men (57.4%).
When talking about the feeling of insecurity in specific physical spaces, in December 2022, 74.3% of the population said they felt insecure at ATMs located on public roads; 67.1%, in public transport; 58.9%, in the bank and 57.0%, in the streets that they usually use.
While when talking about expectations in terms of public security, 34.0% of the population considered that, in the next 12 months, the crime and insecurity situation in their city will continue to be just as bad.
The foregoing means an increase of 1.4 percentage points compared to December 2021, the month in which 32.6 percent was reported. Meanwhile, 25.9% of the population reported that the situation will worsen throughout this year and only 22.7% stated that it will improve.
In turn, last December the Navy (84.6%) was positioned as the most effective authority to prevent and combat crime; followed by the Army (82.3%), the National Guard (71.6%), the state police (52.0%) and the municipal preventive police (44.6%).
