Schools in the interior will receive workshops on responsible animal ownership
The National Institute for Animal Welfare (INBA) launched an educational campaign on animal welfare, ownership and responsible agricultural production. For six months, a tour will be held throughout the country, during which 140 workshops will be held and film screenings will be held. The Minister of Livestock, Fernando Mattos, pointed out that the main challenge is to overcome the cultural barriers rooted in society.
The launch of the campaign took place yesterday, Monday 12th, at the Executive Tower. In addition to Mattos, the Undersecretary of the portfolio, Juan Ignacio Buffa; the General Director of the Secretariat, Fernanda Maldonado, and the President of the INBA, Marcia del Campo, participated.
Between August and January, INBA technicians will visit 70 towns in the interior of the country to promote animal welfare and responsible agricultural production and ownership, explained Del Campo. To this end, they will give more than 140 educational workshops in public schools, aimed at children in 4th, 5th and 6th grade. It will be a fun event, in which different situations will be proposed to be resolved, he explained.
In addition, together with the Ecocinema organization, some 70 film screenings will be held in public spaces, with audiovisual pieces related to the theme. The objective is to integrate families and the community, beyond school-age children, he said.
Mattos said that the main challenge is to overcome the cultural barriers rooted in society. In this regard, he valued the fact of raising awareness on the subject through the formal education system. The campaign not only focuses on pets, but also on those in sports and those used for production, he added.
According to the minister, irresponsible animal ownership is linked to violence between neighbours. He also said that it is also a matter of public health, as animals can transmit diseases.
In another order, he highlighted the importance with which this administration treated animal welfare and valued the creation of the INBA, as well as the need to strengthen it.
