In an operation carried out Monday by inspectors of the National Customs Authority at the currency control point, the retention of alleged smuggling cigarettes was achieved, which were transported in a truck with an approximate value of B/.139,078.13 .
The vehicle, from the city of Panama and destined for Bocas del Toro, was arrested after a series of suspicious behaviors by the driver was observed. Although initially the carrier declared to be moving varied merchandise, which included instant foods and jewelry articles, his nervous attitude generated reasonable doubts among the inspectors, who proceeded to carry out an exhaustive review of the content of the truck.
During the inspection, hidden cigarettes were discovered within black cartridges, camouflaged among other products. This technique used to hide illicit merchandise highlights the tactics used by smugglers to evade customs controls.
The National Customs Authority reiterates its commitment in the fight against smuggling and ensures that it will continue to implement strict measures to safeguard the country’s borders.
