The crimes of theft and slaughter of large livestock generate alarm in Ciego de Ávila, where last week the daily average was 10, reaching 17 in one day. according to a note published by the official newspaper Invasivethe economic losses exceed 728,999 pesos.
“We cannot lower our guard for a moment with these facts. It is necessary to check daily, win in prevention so as not to see ourselves in the need to clarify any crime later,” said Liván Izquierdo Alonso, member of the Central Committee and first secretary of the Communist Party. in the province.
Only one municipality, Baraguá, fulfilled the calf birth commitment, and even so, the province left a deficit of 2,527 births less than expected for July
The review of the agricultural and livestock situation this Monday left other negative data related to the evident mismanagement of cattle. Only one municipality, Baraguá, complied with the calf birth commitment, and even so, the province left a deficit of 2,527 births less than expected for July.
Izquierdo Alonso called for more attention because perhaps the debt is not such and simply the animals are not registered. The practice has been going on for decades on the Island, where it is compulsory to declare the possession of cattle and the sex. This last factor is especially important, because it leads to compromises in birth rates and milk supply.
For a long time, due to the high penalties that these crimes entailed, farmers have tended to falsify the data to avoid commitments with the State and informally sell the meat or milk obtained, when not, directly, consume them, something still prohibited . Since last year, a battery of measures has slightly liberalized the consumption and sale of meat, but as long as the agreements reached with the authorities are fulfilled.
Milk, they assured at Monday’s meeting, is recovering slowly because there are “many reserves in the territories to establish effective control.” At that time, Izquierdo Alonso quoted the Invasive Route Agricultural Company, which owes more than 100,000 litres, although this is not the only one of its problems. At the beginning of this July, the newspaper dedicated an extensive report to talk about the financial problems of the company, whose losses amounted to 723,597 pesos in May alone and, throughout the year, to 2,520,473.
The Agriculture delegate recalled that ranchers who wish to do so can request land until August 31 and that there are 1,639 producers with 10 or more cows who do not have or “do not want” adjoining areas to expand.
Izquierdo Alonso explained that there are other crimes that derive from the theft of cables or “illegal acts against state and private property,” for which he blamed the lack of vigilance committed by the administration and the peasants. For these reasons, he stated that reviews should be done weekly and not monthly.
Orlando Pérez Pedreira, delegate of Agriculture, recalled that ranchers who wish to do so can request land until August 31 and that there are 1,639 producers with 10 or more cows who do not have or “do not want” adjoining areas to expand. The official asked that strategies be sought to motivate them to do so, since this could improve the supply of proteins for the population.
Producers have often insisted that they need laws that favor them and not more regulations that have not helped to date. One of the most anticipated measures, the possibility of selling after fulfilling the contract with the State, has meant more frustration than profit, since very few farmers are able, in the current situation, to produce what was agreed, but also, the prices that they are paid are insufficient in a context of hyperinflation such as the current one and, as if that were not enough, they are forced to buy many products in freely convertible currency, while the State pays them with pesos. All these reasons once again push ranchers to the informal market and, consequently, to the absence of milk and meat in the warehouses.
