Last Sunday (14), Father Júlio Lancellotti announced at his mass at the São Miguel Arcanjo Parish, in the Mooca neighborhood, in São Paulo, that this would be the last broadcast of the celebration on the internet.
The Catholic priest did not explain the reason but, according to Denise Ribeiro, a journalist and volunteer who works with the priest, the end of the broadcasts is a determination of the Archdiocese of São Paulo. She says that the order was received last week directly from Dom Odilo Scherer, archbishop of São Paulo.
Given the commotion generated by the letter, Lancelotti published a note this Tuesday (16) reaffirming the temporary suspension of internet transmission. However, he says that masses normally continue in person on Sundays, at 10am.
In Catholic WhatsApp groups, information also circulated that Dom Odilo had reported the transfer of Father Júlio from the parish, where he has been for 40 years. In his statement, he denies that this will happen: “The information regarding the transfer of the São Miguel Archangel Parish is not valid.”
In contact with Brazil AgencyFather Júlio said: “I receive [a notícia do fim das transmissões] with resilience and obedience.”
THE Brazil Agency sought contact with the Archdiocese of São Paulo by email and telephone, but the organization did not respond. The space remains open for the Church to demonstrate.
Oppressed
Father Júlio Lancelotti is known for his work with the homeless population, in which he provides shelter, social assistance and food to those in need. The priest also has inclusion projects, access to reading and the internet.
The religious man has already been persecuted by right-wing politicians. In 2024, councilor Rubinho Nunes proposed the creation of a CPI to investigate the priest. The request was denied.
