Church calls to combat microtrafficking and corruption

Santo Domingo.-The Conference of the Dominican Episcopate warned in its message on the occasion of Independence Day that the country faces a series of social threats ranging from corruption and micro-trafficking to the crisis of values and family disintegration, for which it urged the authorities and society to assume an “ethic of duty” to preserve national coexistence.

In their traditional message for the anniversary of Independence, titled “Dominican Republic: a people sustained in hope,” the bishops affirmed that the country’s hope depends on the commitment to justice, respect for the law and the defense of human dignity.

The document points out that corruption and impunity continue to be obstacles to social peace, while warning about the impact of microtrafficking on communities and the increase in insecurity.

It also mentions violence in its different manifestations, teenage pregnancy, child abuse and the loss of basic norms of coexistence as factors that generate collective hopelessness. The bishops also questioned the contempt for civil authority and the lack of consequences for those who disturb public order, stating that a society without respect for the laws is approaching chaos.

Family and education
The Church reiterated its defense of the family model made up of father, mother and children and asked that any legal reform preserve that nucleus, considering that its weakening represents a risk for the social future.

He also warned about the spread of ideologies that, in his opinion, affect personal identity and asked the State to strengthen mental health services to care for those who need it.

The message also emphasizes training in values in schools and the responsibility of supervising educational content aimed at children and young people.

The document also addresses the use of artificial intelligence and the digital revolution, pointing out that technology must be at the service of the human person and not cause dehumanization or ideological control.
