Chucho Valdés will be honored as a Jazz 2025 teacher at Washington DC

Miami, United States. – Cuban pianist and composer Chucho Valdés will be one of the honorees in Nea Jazz Masters 2025 eventsorganized by the National Fund for US Arts (NEA) in collaboration with the John F. Kennedy center for the performing arts.

The celebrations will take place from April 24 to 26 in Washington DC, and will include master classes, conversations and a free tribute concert that will also be broadcast online and radio.

Valdés, considered one of the most influential musicians of Afro -Cuban jazz, will share this recognition with Marshall Allen, Marilyn Chispell and Gary Giddins (the latter awarded for his jazz promotion work).

Upon receiving the distinction of Jazz Master 2025, the musician himself assured that it was the “greatest honor” received in his career. “Coming from Cuba, I never thought I would reach the highest recognition that the United States gives to a jazz musician. After seeing so many legends that I admire, I feel very proud to be one of them,” Valdés added.

On Thursday, April 24, the Cuban pianist will give a master class open to the public with music students from Howard. The event will take place between 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm at the Hall of Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts on the main campus of the institution.

On Saturday, April 26, at 10:30 am, Valdés will participate in a musical conversation at the NPR headquarters with the other winners. The activity, entitled “Listening Party”, will include music and personal stories, and will be co -presented by Felix Contreras (NPR Music) and Sunny Sumter (DC Jazz Festival).

That same night, at 8:00 pm, the tribute will culminate with a tribute concert at the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater. Valdés will perform with his group Chucho Valdés Royal Quartet, composed of Horacio Hernández, José A. GOLA and Roberto Jr. Vizcaíno Torre. The function will also include performances by Marshall Allen with Sun Ra Arkestra and Marilyn Chispell with Reggie Workman. In honor of Gary Giddins, David Murray, Russell Carter, Emma Dayruff and Marta Sánchez will act.

The concert will be free and can be followed by live broadcast through Arts.gov and Kennedy-Center.orgin addition to radios and allied portals such as NPR Music, Jazz at Lincoln Center and Wbgo.

With a career of more than six decades, Valdés has been the central figure of Latin jazz since the legendary Irakere group founded in 1973. He has won seven Grammy and Six Latin Grammy awards, and has been distinguished by entities such as FAO and Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame. His career, marked by the fusion of jazz, classical music, Afro -Cuban tradition and rock, has earned it worldwide recognition.

The Nea Jazz Masters Fellowship, created in 1982, is the greatest recognition granted by the United States Government to live Jazz musicians. Among its previous containers are Paquito d’EntraKenny Barron and Betty Carter. Since its creation, 177 figures have received this award.
