The Christmas and New Year 2026 festivities are already in the air in the streets. For businesses and companies, this is the opportunity to increase their sales given that, at this time, workers receive their bonuses and many others have the money withdrawn from their AFP. The president of the Chamber of Commerce, Fanny Galván, stated that in this time of stable economy, an increase in sales of food and gifts is expected. “Even holidays promote tourism,” he indicated. But the truth is that there is also a lot of competition. In recent years, when access to Chinese imports has increased, warehouses with products that are sold from one sol, have been a serious blow to self-managed businesses, such as small merchants who have a stand in a gallery or a stall in a market.
The manager of the Huancayo Chamber of Commerce, José Luis García Terrazos, stated that in the province of Huancayo there are already 500 businesses dedicated to the sale of imported products, their low cost has hit local producers. Among those affected are artisans. There are new sales methods that have disrupted the way of doing business. Yesterday, we visited some of the importing stores, where there were garlands that are sold for 1.20 soles, when in a shop in Jirón Mantaro they are sold for 5.00 soles. One of the best-selling products were Christmas pencils at 0.90 cents. “It is very difficult to compete with an imported product because they are manufactured with certain quality standards and affordable prices, when before buying an imported product was a luxury. Now even purchases are “online”, from businesses that do not have a store, they evade taxes, they have no store or staff costs and they disrupt other businesses,” commented José Luis García Terrazos. Given this situation, it was considered urgent to use strategies and ingenuity so that merchants face these new challenges. He asked that the municipalities help so that businesses are in formal and safe places to provide guarantees to their clients. He noted that in recent years, the communes have become a bureaucratic barrier.
MARKETS. For his part, the president of the Modelo market, Fermín La Torre, regretted that the Provincial Municipality of Huancayo cannot and does not have the will to remove the street vendors that surround them and make unfair competition to their businesses. The most affected are the clothing and shoe merchants on the second floor, whose sales have been reduced by 50%. In the Mantaro jirón, they sell clothes and sneakers and in the afternoons in the Cajamarca jirón, they also hold a fair for these products. Now even a category of cevicheros has appeared that even occupy the track. Although they have requested, multiple hearings with the mayor of Huancayo, Dennys Cuba, do not give them an appointment and neither do the Economic Promotion or Transit managers, they do not resolve the problem of the occupation of roads, which threatens the formality of the market.
