Christmas excesses can affect cancer patients, alerts Society of Oncology

Excesos de Navidad pueden afectar a pacientes con cáncer, alerta Sociedad de Oncología

Santo Domingo.– The president of the Dominican Society of Medical Oncology (SODOM) urged cancer patients to take extreme care of their health during the Christmas festivities, to avoid complications associated with excesses typical of the season.

The doctor Angela Cabreja warned that alcohol consumption, eating disorders and staying up late can negatively affect people undergoing cancer treatment. He recommended maintaining a balanced diet, moderating sweets and sugary drinks, and avoiding fatty or highly seasoned foods.

He also advised prioritizing fruits, vegetables and foods rich in nutrients, as well as avoiding alcohol due to its possible interference with medications and weakening of the immune system.

Among other measures, he called not to smoke or be exposed to tobacco smoke, respect sleep schedules, avoid staying up too late and not interrupt treatments or taking medications.

Cabreja stressed that, due to their immunological condition, these patients must reinforce hygiene measures, wear a mask in closed and crowded spaces, and avoid crowds to reduce the risk of respiratory infections.

“Christmas should be a time of joy, but also of responsibility. The best gift for an oncology patient is to take care of their health and follow medical recommendations,” he said.

The specialist took advantage of the message to congratulate the Dominican people on the occasion of Christmas.
