The Panamanian coach, the Spanish-Danish Thomas Christiansen, was confident this Sunday, after the victory over Jamaica, in being able to get a positive result in his visit to Mexico on Wednesday on the eleventh date of the concacaf octagonal for the Qatar World Cup -2022.
“Dreaming is free and why not?” Christiansen answered at a press conference when asked if he saw a viable victory for his team on Wednesday against Mexico at the Azteca stadium.
“We are going to go there with all optimism, I think we have nothing to lose, just win, everything we get positive from Mexico is welcome,” added Christiansen after Panama’s 3-2 victory against Jamaica this Sunday at home.
The World Cup awards three direct tickets to Qatar and the possibility of a playoff for the fourth-placed team against a team from Oceania.
With four dates remaining, Canada leads the standings with 22 points, followed by the United States and Mexico with 18, Panama 17, Costa Rica 13, Jamaica 7, El Salvador 6 and closes Honduras with 3 units, although Salvadorans and Hondurans have a match less.
“We have to go with faith and confidence to be able to get something positive,” although “we know the quality that Mexico has,” said Christiansen.
“It’s three more points to try to scratch something,” added the canalero strategist, who could face losses in defense of Andrés Andrade and Harold Cummings, who were beaten in the match against Jamaica.
Christiansen, a defender of control of the ball and combined soccer, with high pressure and speed in attack, also stated that he will not change his style of play against the Mexicans.
“If we can keep the ball, Mexico doesn’t have it and that’s kind of the idea,” Christiansen said.
