China, a historical ally of the Cuban Government, joins the recent statements by a UN officialwho assured that US restrictions “have substantially deteriorated the humanitarian situation” in the Caribbean country.

Guo called on Washington to “listen carefully to the just calls of the international community, immediately lift the blockade and sanctions against Cuba and remove it from the list of hostile countries.”
US sanctions and the humanitarian crisis in Cuba
The UN rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights, Alena Douhan, recently stated that US sanctions against Cuba “have substantially exacerbated the humanitarian crisis” in the Caribbean country.
According to Guo, the official’s conclusions “are totally consistent with the recent adoption by an overwhelming majority of the UN General Assembly of a resolution to end the US blockade of Cuba.”
The United Nations official clarified, however, that sanctions are not the only cause of the serious situation suffered by the islandalso affected “by the economic crisis, natural disasters, covid-19 and other challenges at the national level,” according to the Spanish agency.
The Belarusian jurist arrived in Havana on November 11 to analyze the current effects of the network of economic, commercial and financial sanctions that Washington has had against Cuba for the last six decades.
UN Rapporteur affirms that US sanctions aggravate the humanitarian crisis in Cuba
In his preliminary report of the visit, the final version of which he will present in September 2026 to the UN Human Rights CouncilDouhan urged the North American country to stop “using the rhetoric of sanctions” and other measures as a “political instrument.”
The Cuban Government maintains that US sanctions are the main cause of the country’s situation and its first obstacle to development. They estimate millionaire damages due to the embargo from the US to Cuba.
However, some Cuban experts consider that, although the sanctions do have serious repercussions for the country, they are not the main problem of its current situation.
