Chinese gain ground in Nicaragua; Ministry of the Interior formalizes registration of an Association of Chinese residents

The Association of Chinese Residents in Nicaragua (ADCREN), which obtained its legal status on July 9, was officially registered with its perpetual number 7097, according to the registration certificate published this Tuesday, July 23, by the Ministry of the Interior in the official newspaper La Gaceta.

The publication details that ADCREN aims to “strengthen the link with the Chinese embassy in Nicaragua and serve as a bridge for exchanges between China and Nicaragua.”

They also aim to “strengthen ties with the Nicaraguan government and reflect the reasonable wishes and demands of the Chinese in Nicaragua.”

ADCREN, led by its president Wei Chen and its vice president Qingjiang Du, is the third Chinese non-governmental organization that the Ortega government has authorized in recent months. Last May, it formalized the operation of the Association for the Peaceful Unification of China in Nicaragua (APUPCH) and four months earlier, in January, it granted legal status to the Nicaragua-China Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CCNN).

Ortega strengthens his allies

The Ortega regime, after breaking relations with Taiwan in December 2021, has rushed to strengthen its ties with the Chinese government, signing cooperation agreements, such as the National Housing Program Nuevas Victorias; granting mining concessions, such as the one awarded last May to the Nicaraguan company Xinxin Linze Minería Group SA; and allowing the establishment of Chinese-owned businesses in various parts of Nicaragua.

In Managua, the establishment of Chinese-owned businesses is becoming more and more evident. In the Mercado Oriental, the largest in the capital, there are several modules with Chinese capital that sell shoes and clothing. A fairly large store with a variety of items has also been located in Plaza Once. A whole “China Mall” building has also been opened in Pista Suburbana and another in Las Colinas.

The Ortega regime distributes support to China and its people and investors, while in Nicaragua it cancels and confiscates non-profit organizations dedicated to social, economic, cultural, human rights promotion and support for victims of violence in the country. From 2018 to date, according to official documentation published first as legislative resolutions of the National Assembly, and then as ministerial decrees of the Ministry of the Interior, the regime has canceled more than 3,600 non-profit organizations.
