The representative of the People’s Republic of China, Fu Cong, stated during his speech at the emergency meeting of the Security Council that the actions that the United States has been carrying out in the Caribbean, by sinking Venezuelan vessels, are a threat to peace in the region and International Law.
«In the name of the fight against drug trafficking, the United States has deployed forces in the Caribbean, off the coast of Venezuela and has sunk Venezuelan vessels, intercepted fishing vessels, increasing tensions in the region. These unilateral measures, these operations, represent a violation of the rights of these people and represent a threat to the freedom of navigation in these waters and could undermine the freedom of countries on the high seas, in accordance with the Laws of the Sea. They represent an interference against another country and, therefore, violates International Law and is a threat to regional peace,” he stressed.
The representative of China said that they are concerned about the situation and will follow developments closely.
«China is against any action that violates the principles of the United Nations Charter, as well as the sovereignty and security of other countries. “We reject the threat and use of force in international relations and the interference of foreign forces in the internal affairs of Venezuela,” he emphasized.
Given this situation, he requested that such actions stop and that the excuse of fighting drug trafficking not be used to endanger the security of the Venezuelan nation.
“China has always supported efforts to fight international crime through enhanced cooperation and we ask the United States to carry out its state security operations normally and in compliance with the law,” he stressed.
He reiterated that the Latin American and Caribbean countries are sovereign and independent and recalled that in 2014 the region was declared a “zone of peace.”
He concluded by saying that he hopes that the United States listens to the countries of the region and guarantees peace and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean.
